Hi Folks

I'm going to be moving Steampunk Inspirations to Pinterest. It's just much easier to build out the image library there. Here's the link to find lots more goodies.

STEAMPUNK AND VICTORIAN INSPIRATIONAL IMAGES

I'll keep this page live here for a while to help with the transition but check in on Pinterest as I think you'll be very pleased at what you find there.

During the Victorian Era, frugality and industry of mind and body were considered great virtues. It was also a time of great invention of devices and objects to better work and life. The Wooten Patent desk was a great representation of the high art of victorian cabinetmaking and design. It was an entire office in a single piece of folding furniture. In the days before computers and the internet, this was the closest a person could come to having everything you needed within arms length.

A good friend of mine Nick Jainschigg just sent me a link to a marvelous steamy historical contraption that looks to be in excellent shape. It's the worlds oldest car and it looks to fetch quite a sum of money at auction. Enjoy.

During the Victorian Era (and even Earlier) there was a persistent fear of Vampires in many places around the world. Here in Rhode Island where I live there was quite an infestation or "plague" of vampires that the history books believe they recorded.

Belief in vampires rose and fell with the appearance of various plagues and widespread illnesses.

(Gruesomeness warning. description below is a bit visceral)

With large amounts of people dying, burials often didn't happen as quickly as needed.

Sewing machines from the victorian age show us some of the finest high style victorian design of form,  decoration, function and the high art of victorian metal casting. These engines were part of the very foundation of commerce and industry of the Victorian Age both on an industrial level and in individual homes as well. They transformed the business of clothing and cloth goods and brought the cost of making them down to an affordable level for a much larger part of the population.

Recently, I came across a gold mine of authentic victorian wallpaper patterns at Victorian Collectibles Ltd. These samples aren't just inspired by Victorian Wallpaper. They are full on historically accurate reproductions!

The Victorian age was such a time of richly layered patterns, colors and decoration that rooms were often like people. It took a while to truly get to appreciate the subtleties and discoveries it contained. For a writer/illustrator like myself, these finds are pure gold.

So if anyone wonders whether or not Steampunk, Dieselpunk and all the other forms of punk bubbling about in our counterculture/subculture, are having an impact on mainstream life just take a look at this random sampling of furniture and lighting offerings from Restoration Hardware. These stores are in malls and major shopping areas!

The Aesthetic of what we are up to is definitely having an impact on mass media trends right now.

Cal Lane makes incredible works of art on industrial items of metal. I love this kind of work as it makes us look differently at the invisible items around us and it shows the potential for art through decoration on utilitarian surfaces.

My wife forwarded this incredible link to me of the art of Wim Delvoye.

About this Blog
Hello friends and visitors. I've started this blog to post anything that I find that might inspire those of us who create in the Steampunk world. Some of the finds will be other blogs and websites (I always give credit and click through) and some may be scans or photographs.
As I work on my Frahnknshtyne project I often find things on the web or elsewhere that are very interesting and spark ideas for creation. I invite you to send along anything you think would be good to share on this blog as well. If you find there's an accreditation missing please send me a note and I'll add it. I hope you enjoy.
Cheers for now,
Kevin Mowrer
